What does this mean?
Well, I call this my lost crusade! It means that photography was only allowed during the first three numbers (sometimes even 2!) of that particular gig. Thus that one could only take photos while 1. the band was "cold" 2. the audience was "cold" 3. one hadn't yet figured out staging and lightshow. Today that "3 first numbers only" rule is decided sometimes by the band/management, sometimes by the record company, sometimes by the promoter (just in case!), sometimes even by the security stewards themselves (just in case!). So you may understand why photos on these pages may look all the same and not as good as those from other pages.
One could understand if the band were to make a specially bright light show for the first 3 numbers to allow for good photography and then move on with a lower key one aftwerwards. But usually those famous 3 first songs are poorly lit as to purposedly impede decent photography. To me this is blatant hypocrysis.
One could understand if the band was disturbed by photographers. But pro photographers (those who get photo passes and obey the "3 first" rule) are low in the photo pit and do not use flash and are not disturbing / distracting the band. I have yet to hear a good explanation for this rule (debate welcome).
Ultimately I feel sorry for the bands, because in a few years when they will look back on their carreers through photos, it will seem they only ever played 3 songs gigs ;-) and because they will not have the best possible photos of their performances.
Think of it this way: most of the archive section of this site that so many visitors and bands alike enjoy would not even exist if bands / management had behaved then the way they do today. Pure and simple. Period.

Did you take all these photos yourself?

Yes, every single one of them!

Can I use these photos on my site?

Yes, BUT you must follow these few simple rules:
- request permission first
- all photos must display the embedded credit i.e. (c) Philippe Carly - www.newwavephotos.com (or users.skynet.be/phicarly) and link to this site
- the mention "(c) Philippe Carly - www.newwavephotos.com" must also be present in text form
- you may not crop or alter the photos in any way
- you will not use more than 30% of any single photosession / concert / html page
- you will put a sentence like "more photos from this session can be found here" with a link to the page the photos came from
- inform me when the photos are up on your site
- you MAY NOT redistribute these photos in any way
This authorization DOES NOT constitute in any way a total or partial cession of my copyrights.

When will you put photos of xyz (my favourite band) on the site?

I am glad you checked here before asking by e-mail!
This is probably the second most asked question. And the answer is invariably I DON'T KNOW. And honest I don't. I scan randomly through my negs and slides. Sometimes I will do chronologically for a while, sometimes not. Sometimes there are some particluar photos I think of and try to locate them... It's really random, and I DON'T DO REQUEST. So don't waste our time asking. Be patient and check back often. ;-)

Can I buy prints?

Yes :-)
All photos are available in 30x45 cm (12"x18"), 40x60 cm (16"x24") and 60x90 cm (24"x36") sizes. (See Fine prints page for additional information).

Who are you?

I picked it up photography at the same time and in the same manner Punks picked up music. I was trying to capture the bands' visual worlds rather than portray my own. I was working for various local (Belgian) magazines such as More, Ecoute, En Attendant, TéléMoustique, some Dutch magazines such as Tresspassers W, Vinyl. My photos were also published in UK (Sounds, NME) and US (Creem, NY Rocker) press and were featured in books (Joy Division, Pat Benatar), tour programs (Siouxsie and the Banshees) and on record covers (Neon Judgement, Ramones, Durutti Column, Eyeless in Gaza, à;Grumh...). I stopped taking pictures when most bands started forbidding taking concert pictures for marketing reasons. In 2003, the success of this site motivated me to resume photographing concerts and bands, this time digital.

Where have you been all this time?

Well, first of all, I was waiting for technology to offer fast, easy and affordable quality scanning of 35mm negatives. And equally good and affordable photographic prints form these scans.
Then I waited for the time to be right for this kind of stuff: 20 years seems like a good time to see nostalgia rise.
And it finally took much convincing from a friend who wanted to make an exhibition with all these photos and I figured this would provide an excellent tool to help choose images for the exhibition.

Queen or Kate Bush hardly qualify as New Wave or do they?

Well I had to choose a name for the site, hadn't I? I figured 'new wave' represented for best or for worse the core of my interest in those days. And yes, there are lots of these photos that aren't even remotely connected with 'new wave'. The site is there to showcase all the photos I took then, also the photos I've done more recently. I was working for magazines then which helped me get in and take photos at gigs I liked but it also meant going and taking pictures at some I liked less. Yin and Yang.

183 photos of Les Gauff' au Suc' and only 69 of the Ramones... Duh?

What's wrong with Les Gauff' au Suc'? Rock'n'roll is about fun. And parody is fun! LOL.
You're comparing apples with oranges. Way back (Ramones) when I was young, not rich, film and processing were expensive relative to my tight budget, which meant I made questionable choices like not photograph a band because 'it was only a support act' or because 'they're from Belgium, I surely will have another opportunity' or because 'the light show's not that good'..... Besides I had a manual camera with a few fixed focal length lenses which meant spending lots of time swapping lenses, focusing and getting the proper exposure. Furthermore, as there was no pit in most of the venues I was taking photos from within the (pogoing) audience and changing points of view took forever. Thus ending up with few pictures of the bands I did photograph. Now (Les Gauff' au Suc') I shoot digital, with a fast autofocus camera and zoom lenses which allow me at last to shoot the number of frames I like during a concert or the 3 first numbers most likely :(
At least Les Gauff' au Suc' will let you take photos during the entire set!
There is nothing more I would like than go back in time with my present equipment and photograph all these bands more thouroughly. I obviously can't and will have to live with it (and so will you).
But in NO WAY (with the notable exception of Siouxsie and the Banshees) is the number of photos related to my (dis)liking of a band.

What's with those Nebulas?

My passion for concert photography is about music but also the great people you meet in this "business". In the present days of make it or break it marketed careers, I find refreshing that there are still musicians who will take whatever little days off thay can take from their bread and butter jobs, cross the Atlantic at their own expenses, to come and play in small pubs for small enthusiastic crowds. Happy to meet their fans, sell their own merchandise to help cover the expenses. The Nebulas are people like that, a refreshing breeze in a business ran by money. I discovered great guys and I hope I can say we became friends.

Some photos are out of focus or blurred...

As stated above, I picked up photography by myself, improving along the way. Besides, I was trying to capture the moment, working with ambiant lights most of the time, be it off stage or on stage.
I found out lots of these 'imperfect' pictures still cary lots of emotions and are a good recording of the instant's magic.
Furthermore, I've had fans (and this is a site for fans, isn'it?) request "all pictures I had, even bad ones!" and I'm only too happy to oblige. So you will find "fan grade" photos as well as more "professional" ones.

Why do the pictures have fuzzy white borders?

Basically, that's how the pictures come out of the scanner. Besides, I think straight edges are so BORING. This is a left over of the analog nature of the negative transposed in the digital world. Plus I LIKE IT like that.

Why do you say coming soon (?) probaly ! on the home page?

These names come from a list of concerts (incomplete as of today) I've attended.
But it is probable that I haven't photographed all theses bands. For many reasons: photos forbidden, ran out of film, was not interested in the supporting act(s), arrived late, left early, was backstage interviewing...

What does next to a link mean?

It indicates that the site listed has been kind enough to link back to my pages. As a courtesy for this favor, they are listed before the others.

What do , and stand for?

Well, in order to maximize your surfing experience, I tried to make a selection (subjective of course) in the posted pictures. Which proved to be difficult and heartbreaking as they're all "my children"...
indicates what I consider to be a very good photograph, almost good enough to have been taken by a real photographer! Some of these photographs have been published or used here and there.
is for the bulk of the work, good photos, not exceptional.
are photos for the die hard fans who want them all. You asked for them, here they are. This site is for fans after all....
Hope this helps.... let me know....
